Expansion to include the large ballroom

More space for music: the large ballroom, previously postponed for financial reasons, was finally completed in the first Liederhalle in 1875. The press praised the hall’s classical beauty and excellent acoustics.

Conversion of the old Liederhalle

The old Liederhalle was converted during the peak of the Stuttgart art and culture scene between 1906 and 1910 for 132,000 German marks. The business areas and public hall were also expanded.

This is when things really started to happen.

The Liederhalle became the cultural and social hub of the city of Stuttgart. Numerous national and international musicians brought our Liederhalle to life with their songs and instruments.

Tranquil past

Around 1924, the area around the first Liederhalle (1), with the garrison church (2) and old riding arena (3) as direct neighbours, was much quieter than it is today.

Old Liederhalle destroyed in World War II

The old Liederhalle was completely destroyed during an air raid on the night of 7th to 8th October 1943. The Stuttgart Liederkranz choral society expressed the demand for a new concert hall with a concert in the ruins after World War II.

The Liederhalle reopens

Around ten years after the war, Stuttgart rebuilt its Liederhalle on the original site. The new Liederhalle was an attraction even during its construction and was continually in the public gaze. After a construction period of just nine months, the new Liederhalle was opened by mayor Josef Hirn.

Expansion to include the conference extension

In 1991, Wolfgang Henning added a conference extension to the Liederhalle to create today's Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Liederhalle. From a concert hall, the Liederhalle has now developed into an internationally recognised congress centre.

Renovation of the congress area

After 27 years of continuous operation, our Liederhalle is undergoing extensive renovations to ensure it continues to be excellently positioned to meet future requirements. The modernisation work encompasses the fire protection system, stage equipment and event technology, as well as the building control system and network technology.
